In discussing this with a friend, they pointed out that the human foot is not intended to walk on flat, i.e. paved, tiled or otherwise modern day flat surfaces that civilization now offers us. They recalled a time when they lived near the ocean and walked barefoot in the sand and on the rocks (after building up a little thickness to their soles) and experienced a similar effect to what you have experienced!
